About the Mural

This mural represents the universality of humanity. It is on the north wall of the Mossy Rock building. Lead artist for The Illumination Mural is Noah Cotter, son of noted McMenamin’s artists and muralists Joe Cotter and Kolieha Bush. Noah specializes in calligraphy and Insular design, the art of illuminated manuscripts such as The Book of Kells.

The mural is a 450 sq ft separated into three panels surrounded by borders of interlaces, key patterns, and spiral designs using the Insular style. The central panel depicts a stylized man and woman supporting the earth with upraised arms and the images entwined by golden knot-work, signifying the universal interconnection between the human race and the planet we inhabit. The left panel contains an infinity sign imposed over a knot-work saltire (basically a broad X), while the right panel depicts a stylized, illuminated heart symbol over another knot-work saltire.
